ボン・スコットが33歳で亡くなった時、多くの人々はこれがAC/DCの終わりだと思った。しかしバンドは、スコットお気に入りのボーカリスト、ブライアン・ジョンソンを迎え入れ、史上最高のセールスを記録したアルバム『BACK IN BLACK』をリリースすることで復活を果たした。『BONFIRE』は、荒々しいリフと下品な歌詞が特徴だったスコット時代のバンドに捧げる5枚組のトリビュート作品だ。ディスク1はニューヨークのアトランティック・スタジオでのライブ録音で、当初はプロモーション用のみのリリースだったが、長年にわたり無数に海賊版が出回っていた。性病への挑発的なトリビュート「The Clap」から、性的に奔放なルーベンス風の女性ファンを描いた「Whole Lotta Rosie」まで、名曲が詰まった内容だ。ディスク2と3は、1980年のコンサート映画『Let There Be Rock』のサウンドトラックを拡張したもの。フランスの観客の前で録音されたこのパフォーマンスは文化的な違いを超越し、言語の壁を越えて観客が一緒に歌う様子も収められている。『VOLTS』と題されたディスクには、「Touch Too Much」や「Get It Hot」などのスタジオ作業中の音源が収録されており、完成版とは異なる歌詞が確認できる。スローブルースの「Ride On」が含まれているのは、「Beatin’ Around The Bush」や「She’s Got Balls」のような猥雑な楽曲に埋もれがちなAC/DCのもう一つの側面を示している。リマスター版の『BACK IN BLACK』がこのセットを締めくくり、一つの時代の終わりと新たな時代の始まりを刻んでいる。
