50年前、サイケデリックムーブメントが起こり、髪は自由に伸ばされ、オーガニックフードが話題となり、アメリカのファッショントレンドはシャネルや他のブランドに支配されていなかった。まさにこのムーブメントの真っ只中に、グレイトフル・デッドがいた。エレキギターを携えた正真正銘のヒッピーたちは、幻覚剤に浸り、活気あるカウンターカルチャーの中で花開き、その基盤はさまざまな音楽ジャンルのサイケデリックな融合だった。ブルース、ロック、カントリー、60年代ポップス——半世紀経っても色あせない正真正銘のごった煮だ。グレイトフル・デッドは今もパーティーを続け、1968年にリリースされた2作目のアルバム『Anthem Of The Sun』のリマスター版（50周年記念デラックスエディション）を発表した。このアルバムでは、2人目のドラマー、ミッキー・ハートが加入した。当時、バンドにはジェリー・ガルシア、ボブ・ウィアー、ロン・マッカーナン、フィル・レッシュ、ビル・クルーツマンが在籍していた。アルバムには、1968年バージョンと1961年のより有名なミックス（デイヴィッド・グラッサーによるリマスター）の2種類の『Anthem Of The Sun』が収録されている。各曲のスタジオ録音とライブ録音を組み合わせたアルバムは非常に珍しい。間違いなく、グレイトフル・デッドの最も興味深く、刺激的な作品だ。10分を超える曲やメドレー録音、1967年10月22日のウィンターランドでのコンサートの未発表音源も含まれており、まさに記念碑的なアルバムと言える。『New Potato Caboose』『It Hurts Me Too』『That’s It For The Other One』——それぞれのバージョンは明らかに異なる。ビル・クルーツマンはこのアルバムについてこう語っている。「間違いなく私たちの最も実験的な作品だった。当時は画期的で、今でもサイケデリックなリスニング体験を提供する」。一つの時代がよみがえり、50年前に戻ってグレイトフル・デッドのステージを目の当たりにしたいものだ。——アンナ・コリュート
