エアロスミスは、1987年のアルバム『Permanent Vacation』が成功を収めたことで、誰もを驚かせた。それ以前の数作は、バンドが10年前にピークを迎えたという見方を裏付けるだけの内容だったからだ。続く『Pump』（1989年）は、ラジオ向けの前作を受け継ぎ、ボストン出身の5人組のカムバックがまぐれ当たりではないことを証明した。「Love in an Elevator」や「Janie’s Got a Gun」といったヒット曲は当時MTVやラジオで頻繁に流れ、アルバム全体にも繰り返し聴くに値する深みがあった。アルバムの締めくくりとなる「What it Takes」では、バンドは巧みなパワーバラードの手腕を発揮しつつ、陳腐さの一線をうまく回避している。エアロスミスはその後『Get a Grip』で商業的成功を維持するが、『PUMP』が持つ芸術性と大衆性の絶妙なバランスには及ばず、同作は彼らの最高傑作の一つとして今も評価されている。
